The Deschutes below Pelton Dam is a year-round redband trout fishery, with these native fish active even through winter cold snaps thanks to the tailwater's relatively stable temperatures. Spring and early summer bring consistent dry fly action as pale morning duns and caddis hatches fire up. Steelhead push into the river from late summer through fall, drawing serious swinging anglers from across the region. Summer trout fishing can slow midday but picks back up as evening caddis activity builds.

Redbands stack in the seams along the basalt ledges and in the broken water behind mid-river boulders — look for the transition between fast and slow current. For trout, dead-drifted nymphs under an indicator work well when fish aren't rising, and elk hair caddis or parachute adams patterns shine during surface activity. Steelhead respond well to swung wet flies and spey presentations through the deeper tailouts and runs. Watch river flow carefully — higher flows push fish tight to softer edges, while dropping water concentrates fish in predictable slots. Cooler water temperatures in fall correlate with the best steelhead aggression.
