Martha's Vineyard's kettle ponds and surrounding rips offer a progression of species through the warmer months. Striped bass move into the ponds and estuary mouths in late spring, working baitfish against shallow flats before the heat of summer pushes them deeper or into moving water. By midsummer the bluefish show in force, crashing bait through the rips off the island's south and east faces. Come early fall, anglers shift focus to false albacore and bonito, two of the most coveted targets on the island, as both species push tightly along rip edges and around bait schools before water temperatures drop them off the shelf.

For bass in the ponds, focus on outflow channels on an outgoing tide when baitfish funnel through narrow cuts — that's when a soft plastic on a light jig head or a slow-rolled white bucktail will consistently draw strikes. At the rips, work surface irons and small epoxy jigs on the current seam rather than fighting the full flow. False albacore are notoriously leader-shy, so drop to lighter fluorocarbon and throw small, fast-sinking slim jigs or sparsely tied flatwing flies. Wind pushing into a rip concentrates bait and predators both; a northeast wind stacking against an outgoing tide typically sets up the most productive surface action.
