Manistee sits at the mouth of one of Michigan's best tributary rivers, and that geography shapes everything. In late summer and fall, king salmon stage offshore in Lake Michigan before pushing into the river, followed by coho. Winter and spring belong to steelhead, which run the Manistee in waves tied loosely to water temperature and flow pulses after rain or snowmelt. Brown trout and walleye round out the river, but salmon and steelhead draw most serious anglers here.

On the lake, troll spoons and meat rigs on downriggers over the thermal break where warmer surface water meets cold deep water. Once fish enter the river, focus on the deep runs and seams below gravel riffles where current slows. Swing egg patterns or soft plastics through holding water, and drift spawn sacks near bottom. Rising river levels after rain almost always trigger steelhead movement, so watch the gauge and plan accordingly.
