Lake Coeur d'Alene and the Spokane River arm offer a surprisingly diverse fishery for a northern Idaho lake. Smallmouth bass are the bread-and-butter catch, especially along rocky points and submerged structure throughout summer, while largemouth hold tighter to the tule-lined bays and fallen timber. Walleye are present but underrated here, most active in low-light periods and concentrated near the river channel. Cutthroat and rainbow trout patrol deeper, cooler water through summer and push shallower in spring and fall. Panfish, including crappie and perch, school around dock pilings and brushpiles, and catfish work the softer mud-bottom flats near river inflow. Chain pickerel lurk in weedy bay shallows, though they're a bonus catch rather than a target.

When surface temps climb above 70 degrees, push offshore for smallmouth on drop-shot rigs with finesse plastics around 15 to 25 feet of water. In spring and fall, fish the warming shallows of the bays for largemouth on swimbaits and weightless flukes near emerging or dying vegetation. For walleye, slow-roll a jig-and-minnow combo along the river channel edges at dawn. Trout respond to small spoons and spinners when water temps are in the 55-to-65-degree range. Watch where the river current meets slack bay water — that transition zone consistently stacks multiple species and is the single best starting point on any given day.
