Fortescue sits in the heart of Delaware Bay, and the fishing here shifts dramatically with the seasons. Spring pushes big striped bass up from the ocean to spawn, and the sloughs off the flats concentrate fish that are actively feeding after the winter. Bluefish and weakfish arrive close behind as water temps climb into the mid-50s. By summer, fluke dominate the shallow sandy flats, and black sea bass stack up around any hard structure in deeper water nearby. Tautog hold through fall and into cold weather on the same rocky bottom. Kingfish show through summer in the surf and shallower bay edges, often overlooked but worth targeting.

Work the edges where flats drop into deeper sloughs, particularly on moving tides — fish stage at these transitions waiting for baitfish to push through. For fluke, drift bucktails tipped with Gulp or fresh squid across sandy bottom; keep contact with the bottom and work the current seams. Weakfish and stripers respond well to soft plastics and small bucktails worked slowly, especially during low-light tides. In warmer water, cut mullet or fresh bunker chunk on the bottom produces bluefish and cow weakfish after dark. Pay attention to water clarity — a southwest wind muddies the bay flats and shuts fishing down fast; an east or north wind cleans things up and gets fish moving.
