Depoe Bay's rocky reefs and kelp-fringed structure hold a solid lineup year-round, though the mix shifts with the seasons. Black rockfish and cabezon are the backbone here, biting through most of the year, while lingcod ramp up in late winter and spring when they move shallow to spawn. Halibut show up as waters warm in late spring and carry through summer — that's your flounder-style target on the central coast. Nearshore reefs also hold vermilion and canary rockfish as the season progresses. If you're chasing something with more fight in open water, albacore tuna push inshore during warm summers, often within 20 miles of the bay.

Position matters more than anything here. Fish the upcurrent edge of reef structure and kelp lines — rockfish and halibut both stack where current breaks and baitfish concentrate. For lingcod and blacks, swimbaits and heavy leadheads worked just above bottom are hard to beat. Herring and sardine strips on spreader bars produce well for halibut drifted slowly across sandy transition zones adjacent to reef. Fish the last two hours of an outgoing tide for the strongest bite — current activates the structure. Avoid northwest swells above 8 feet, and watch surface temperature closely in summer; a jump above 58°F often signals albacore opportunity offshore.
