The Chetco River and Brookings south coast are built around chinook and coho salmon, winter and summer steelhead, and bottom fish like lingcod and rockfish nearshore. Salmon fishing peaks in fall as fish stack at the river mouth waiting for rain to lift the Chetco, then push upstream through the lower drift water. Summer steelhead arrive earlier and offer a longer window, while winter steelhead follow heavy December through February rains. Offshore, anglers target halibut during calmer summer swells, and rockfish are available most of the year when bar conditions allow crossing.

On the Chetco, fish hold in the deep green slots behind gravel bars and along cut banks during low clear flows. Side-drifting roe or casting spinners gets more attention when water runs off-color after rain. Watch the bar crossing carefully — the Chetco mouth is notorious for dangerous surf when swell and outgoing tide oppose each other. Cooler water temperatures in fall concentrate salmon near the surface and make them more aggressive. Incoming tides push bait and fish into the lower estuary, so timing your drift to coincide with that push improves contact significantly.
